A Benefit Event for Sierra Club San Diego Conservation Programs

Make an afternoon of it with fellow Sierra Club members and friends as we venture out to locate gray whales.  It is the height of the gray whale migration along our coast and your opportunity to see whales from afar and up close.  Past trips have seen as many as 15 whales.  You will also get to see other sea life such as sea lions, harbor seals, dolphins and some seabirds. We will have onboard a marine biologist, Dr. Renee Owens, to provide interesting facts about what we observe.

We have used the same boat for previous whale watching trips with an experienced and knowledgeable captain and crew. The boat is modern, spacious, and has a comfortable galley.

Bring your cameras and binoculars to make this a memorable whale watching trip.  We recommend warm clothing, sunscreen and hats to be confortable.

Ocean Adventures: Gray Whale Obstacle Course

with Jean-Michele Cousteau

Thursday, February 12, 2015, 6:30 PM

Sierra Club Office - 8304 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., Ste 101, San Diego 92111

Gray whales have the longest migration route of any mammal -- 8,500 to 12,000 miles -- and during their journey they pass some of the world's biggest cities, along some of the most polluted coastlines. In The Gray Whale Obstacle Course, Jean-Michel Cousteau and the Ocean Adventures team travel the length of this migration, from the warm waters of Magdelena Bay in Baja California, Mexico, where the gray whales give birth, nurse their calves, rest and play before their long journey north, to the nutrient-rich feeding grounds of the Bering Sea in Alaska. The team searches for clues about this resilient, yet threatened species to gain a better understanding of the increasing challenges, both natural and man-made, that gray whales face along the way.
