Sierra Club San Diego Inspiring Connections Outdoors (ICO) is a community-outreach program of the Sierra Club dedicated to providing outdoor recreational experiences to low-income urban youth of diverse cultural backgrounds who would not otherwise have the opportunities to actively engage in nature.  Our goals are to help these children learn about the natural history of Southern California, challenge themselves physically, learn how to enjoy wilderness safely, and develop a desire to explore, enjoy and protect open spaces within their local communities.

Can you sponsor a child to go whale watching?  For only $35, you can send a child on an unforgettable trip to experience the majestic beauty and awe of gray whales as they migrate along our coast.

Since 2001, San Diego ICO volunteer leaders have provided year-round outdoor activities to  school and community-based youth programs throughout San Diego County.  ICO currently provides outings in partnership with America's Finest Charter School, City Heights Community Development Center, California Housing Works, and Stephen W. Hawking Math and Science Charter Schools. For most of these kids, ICO is their only way of experiencing and learning about the natural world firsthand.  Our 2016 outings included camping, day hikes and snorkeling trips to places such as Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, Anza-Borrego Desert, La Jolla Cove, Joshua Tree National Park and Sedona, Arizona.  San Diego ICO provides the transportation, equipment, and trained adult volunteer staff for all trips at no cost to the children.
